Keeping Kansas Tax Dollars in Kansas

   Who is KCI?

  • Kansas Correctional Industries is an agency of the Kansas Department of Corrections
  • KCI was established in 1957 by the "Prison Made Goods Act".
  • KCI's Mission: Providing training and work experience in the production of high quality products and the delivery of high quality services to governemental agencies and other approved customers.
  • KCI is self-funded. Using the revenue KCI generates from products and services, it requires no taxpayer-appropriated funds.

   Why KCI?

  • Reduced Public Cost: Saving taxpayer dollars by providing products and services to tax supported agencies at a reduced price thus reducing the amount of tax money needed for operation.
  • Reduced Tax Burden: Self-sustaining programs offset the costs of incarceration, and for every $1 invested in education/training, taxpayers can save $4 to $5 in reincarceration costs.
  • Reduced Recidivism and Better Reentry: Residents who participate in the Correctional Industries program are 24% less likely to return (within three years) and 14% more likely to be gainfully employed after release from custody.
