Kansas Correctional Industries Historical Highlights

1958
|
Correctional Industries established by the Legislature under title Kansas State Industries. Upholstery Shop and Soap Factory, already in operation, become part of Kansas State Industries.

Paint Factory established as part of Kansas State Industries. Lansing Correctional Facility coal and shell mine tunnels collapse; Upholstery Shop walls settle 15 feet.

| 1962 |
Industrial Yard established outside the maximum perimeter of Lansing Correctional Facility. |

| 1975 |
Legislature changes Kansas State Industries title to Kansas Correctional Industries (KCI).
|
|
| 1978 |
Non-profit organizations and churches added to KCI's list of eligible customers by the Legislature. Wood Furniture and Clothing Factory established.

| 1982 |
Legislature reopens KCI's Farming operations.
|
|
| 1985 |
KCI established Data Entry and Microfilm operations.
|
|
| 1986 |
Legislature passes amendment allowing KCI to subcontract with the private sector.

| 1988 |
Two-alarm fire guts KCI Paint Factory. |

Hutchinson Correctional Facility-East opens. Laminated Products separated from Wood Furniture and reloacted to Hutchinson. Vehicle Restoration, Furniture Refinishing and Sewing Shops are established at Hutchinson Correctional Facility-East.

Clothing and Sewing Shops combined at Hutchinson Correctional Facility-East.

|
| 1994 |
Furniture Refinishing and Vehicle Restoration Shops consolidated into one division. Wood Furniture and Reupholstery Shops also combined. |

| 1999 |
Wood Furniture/Reupholstery rebuilt after fire in the Lansing Correctional Facility's maximum compound.
|
|
| 2001 |
Paint and Janitorial Divisions consolidated, creating the Chemical Division.
|
|
| 2003 |
Wood Furniture relocated to Hutchinson and consolidated with the Lamination Division.
|
|
| 2007 |
Legislature adds State employees to KCI's list of eligible customers.
|
|
| 2008 |
KCI opens 3,000 square foot Topeka Showroom on the grounds of Topeka Correctional Facility.
